New electricity Plan

Post by Biggdad » 06 Sep 2017, 10:36

Just received a new electricity plan through AGL. 31.9 cents including GST/Kwh.
They also offered a 16% pay on time discount. I rang them & got it changed to 22% discount
the same as I Had last year.
I rang around before & some others wanted 36 cents & 38 cents /Kwh. Bloody robbers! :character-oldtimer: :hitting_wall :hitting_wall

That's privatisation for you. It's supposed to offer lower prices through competition, but it doesn't, partly because the retailers need to make a profit, but also because they cleverly make sure their offerings can't be compared on an equal basis, much like phone plans.

Certainly privatised in the Brisbane area and if I am not wrong it is State wide.
Buck, who is your energy supplier and are they cheaper than others?

what/who was privatised?
Ergon energy and Energex are still owned by the government aren't they?
and 65% of electricity generated in queensland is owned by the government based on figures i have seen.

found a wiki on it:
"In 2006, the Queensland Government announced plans to privatise the retail arm of the business and its Allgas distribution network in southeast Queensland. The Allgas Distribution Network was sold to Australian Pipeline Trust for $521 million. The electricity distribution network remains in public ownership.

Sun Retail, the retail arm of Energex, was sold at auction to Origin Energy Ltd for A$1.2 billion.[2] The sale was formally effected in early 2007.

Origin Energy purchased a customer base of approximately 800,000 from the New South Wales border to a line just north of the Brisbane River (mostly following Kedron Brook), whilst AGL Energy purchased a customer base of the remaining approximately 400,000 customers north from this line to Gympie and the Sunshine Coast.

Full retail contestability since 1 July 2007 allows electricity customers to choose their electricity retailer. About 19 new retailers (including Origin and AGL) have entered into the Queensland market."

My understanding is prices are still set by the queensland government

I'm with Origin.... I've been on a two year plan with them that's due for renegotiation in November.
My discount is 28% for electricity and 15% for gas.
I had to fight the bastards hard to get this discount.... initially, they offered 12% maximum and refused to budge.
So.... I switched to Energy Australia who offered 24%.
Origin (the bastards) immediately countered with 28%..... so I grabbed it.

I'm expecting another fight with Origin in November when my current plan finishes. Of course, they'll just offer 12% again and refuse to budge, again !
I know that I can get a minimum of 20% in minutes by phoning "Simple Energy" so that is my pre-planned strategy ! :heeheehee

Buck_naked, this is the situation in Qld at present:

https://www.business.qld.gov.au/industr ... and/retail

SE Qld is deregulated since 1-7-2016 and Regional Qld is still regulated.

Strange but true!

so it was the retail pricing that was deregulated last year.
the actual retail privatisation took place in 2007.
That would make it a decision by the Beattie/Bligh dynasty

doing the research on this i found out how i suddenly became an AGL customer.
i was sold off by energex to AGL, like a piece of meat.

and looking at my bill its surprising how much is now fixed charges:
electricity used and charged for.........$172
Fixed charges ..............................$114
Total.........................................$286. (for 3 months april to july 2017)

so even if i cut my use to Nil i would still get a bill for $114. :character-oldtimer: :character-oldtimer: :character-oldtimer:

It's the Telstra strategy. As people reduced their use of landlines because they had a mobile, Telstra increased its base charge. The power companies have been doing the same thing for at least the last couple of years.

Trumble is sounding like a commie today, saying AGL has one goal to maximise profits.
and by closing down plants they can restrict supply and increase prices.
So why did they privatise in the first place???? :character-oldtimer: :character-oldtimer: :character-oldtimer:

I just rang electricity wizard & they got a better discount from 20% which AGL offered to 25% on electricity
and from 16% to 20% on Gas.
