All this talk of "inequality" and how to address it is just a political furphy...... The human race is made up of unequal individuals - it has always been thus and will remain so forever. Those who are more intelligent, more diligent, harder working or just plain luckier will always fare better financially, socially and in their personal lives. Hard work should be rewarded (within reason) while maintaining a "safety net" social welfare system for the bottom rung of our society. We must each fend for ourselves and fortune will smile on those who most deserve it.
It is stupidity, political suicide and gross discrimination to simply take from the rich to give to the poor.

You seem to overlook the fact that people who have the virtuous qualities you describe are privileged. Nobody gets to choose who they're born to or where.
Discounting the lazy and otherwise undeserving, we all merit a fair suck of the sauce bottle, as Norman Gunston used to say. Giving everyone a fair start in life is essential if we want to get the best out of them. It's better for them, it's better for society, and better for the country.

Good point Perry, but how do you sort the wheat from the chaff? There are plenty of poor people who were born in Vaucluse or Double Bay and wealthy who were born in Mount Druitt or Liverpool. The fact is that people need to strive for success, not have it thrust upon them. Regardless of the rhetoric, politicians are essentially talking about higher taxes for the wealthy to subsidise the poor. That surely bears a strong resemblence to socialism or communism. Maybe the rich can afford to pay a little more but care must be taken lest we stifle ambition and enterprise - we have been seeing a steady exodus of business and intellect to foreign countries where opportunity (and taxes) are more favourable.

It's difficult to strive for success when you're struggling to survive.

Don't forget guys and girls that an overhaul of our tax system has been contemplated since JC played full-back for Jerusalem, i.e. forever!

Today we are at the stage were it is just about 'political suicide' if any party touches taxes, particularly the taxes paid (or not paid) by the elite.
IMHO, we have left it for far too long to make savage changes and corrections in one foul swoop.

KFCH has correctly suggested that taxing business and high income earners will send them packing for overseas.
Not taxing them will see the Plebs taken up arms in way of hay forks and steel pickets. Neither solution is a viable alternative and as Australians we will need to find another way to supplement our income nationally.

I've slipped off the subject, sorry, will need to concentrate more in future!

Taxing the rich is feasible. Other countries do it. However, the problem is compounded by tax havens, one of which is used to good effect by our own prime minister.

The government has taken a solid step in starting to tax monies earned in Australia and closing loopholes that allow multi-nationals to transfer money to another tax jurisdiction before it is taxed here. I dont see much that can be done to address the "poor" in our society - people cant choose their parents at birth yet just about everyone has similar opportunities in life. Study, dedication, hard work etc., etc will lift anyone out of poverty in this country - I am just sick to death of people who sit around their TV and drinking booze while drawing Centrelink benefits and carping about "equality".
I am not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, but I consider that I have "enough" and I got that by working all my life and taking care of my own. Three divorces certainly didnt help with the Family court doing their best to make my Exe's "equal". :flaming_mad

...yet just about everyone has similar opportunities in life.
If only that were true.

Yes that is right Perry, however, i also agree with Hugo regarding
the can who are fit for work and the will not loafers the system
criticizes but tolerates because they vote, that is the hypocrisy
of the political system, a bunch of self-serving gits :character-oldtimer:

There used to be jobs available fit for even the most incompetent. You could work for the government by leaning on your shovel all day. Society needs now to find some way these supposedly incompetent people can feel of use. The actual use they are may not be easy for most of us to see, yet I've heard Nature itself supplies a use for everything. Think of the blowfly, its maggots eating away the gangrenous flesh of wounded soldiers, saving lives. The fumes of ammonia from the horse lines helped many with pneumonia, too. Use is in the most unlikely places, and with the coming computerisation of so much work, we need to broaden our concepts, I think.

If there aren't enough jobs to go around, why should they not go to the ones who want to work? What employer wants an unwilling worker?
But protecting their health is still vital, for their families and for the rest of society as much as for themselves.
