There must be numerous past politicians of dual citizenship. Anyone know if that is correct. Wonder why its such a big issue? I guess there are perfectly sound reasons.

Many reasons Mavis, and not just 44(i). That is really just the tip of the iceburg.

My tip is that the proverbial is just about to hit the fan, soon. 44(i) is just the preliminary. \:D/

Looks like Lambie is clear. Her dad renounced his citizenship ages ago.

She would only be in the clear if her Scottish father renounced his original citizenship BEFORE she was born!!!

Here is the next candidate:

Rebekha Sharkie from Xenophone's team.

YES or NO?

What's your verdict?

I saw Matthias Korman on TV this morning talking with his pronounced South African accent. I have no idea of his background, but it makes a laughing stock of this "dual citizenship" fiasco. Surely (regardless of birth), someone who has spent a large portion of their life in another country is far more likely to have some allegiance to that country than someone who is a foreign citizen by an accident at birth? It seems to me that our priorities here are all wrong........should we elect an Australian citizen to Parliament if they have lived a significant portion of their lives in say Russia, China etc?

From Wikipedia:
Born in the German-speaking town of Eupen in eastern Belgium, [Mathais] Cormann graduated with a Bachelor of Law degree from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Catholic University of Leuven). As part of his university studies Cormann participated in a one-year student exchange program at the University of East Anglia in Norwich in 1993–94, where he first learnt to speak English. At the age of 21, he became a councillor in his local area with the Christian Social Party. Following a visit to Perth in 1994, he migrated to Australia permanently.

Out of interest, this is also from Wikipedia:
Born in Germany, [Eric] Abetz emigrated to Australia as a small child, when his father came to work for Tasmania's Hydro Electric Commission. He was educated at the University of Tasmania and was a barrister and solicitor before entering politics.
[...]
Abetz is a great-nephew of Otto Abetz, a Brigadier General in the SS, who was Nazi Germany's ambassador to Vichy France from 1940 to 1944[5] and was sentenced to 20 years for war crimes relating to the deportation of French Jews to the death camps. Eric Abetz was about 3 months old when Otto Abetz died.

Here is another interesting article regarding Mr. Abetz : http://tasmaniantimes.com/index.php/art ... nunciation

It's surprising that he has been so keen to throw stones like he has lately.

Hot off the press !

"Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie says she will resign from the Federal Parliament over dual citizenship concerns.

Her father was born in Scotland, which means she is entitled to British citizenship by descent."
"Life's too short to drink cheap wine".

I think by this stage the 'sargeant Shultz defence )hogans heroes), " i know nuffin!"
is worn out.
Once again Richard di natale was 100% correct when he said a few days (a week?) ago:
"there is a 99.9% chance there are more cases"
