BAR CODES - Countries of Origin (mostly)

Are we being treated like human beings by our Corporate Captains? Have they heard of the word 'compassion' or is greed the guiding light for them?

BAR CODES - Countries of Origin (mostly)

Post by godfather » 08 May 2011, 19:52

There is a lot of uncertainty by Australians about unsafe products coming in from overseas.
All products have BAR CODES which can tell us a lot about the product itself.
The main standard for BARCODING is the European devised EAN system, which is a 12 digit number with an automatic checkcode (another digit) making it usually 13 digits in total.

The firstTHREE digits of the bar codes indicate the COUNTRY where the code was issued. NOT NECESSARILY THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN OF THE PRODUCT!
However, in 90% of all cases that is also the country of manufacture of the item.

Here are the individual country prefixes in this system:

I have been referring to the barcodes for a long while now. Unfortunately, sometimes you see 93 [Australia] and then you read a bit further and find it was packed here, from overseas products. This takes you back to square one!!!!!!
I am very fussy about NOT buying food items from China, because they have a very bad record in that department.
I read in the paper the other day, about the number of Chinese families, who IMPORT Milk and baby food from Australia, SOOOOO ??

8-[
