DEMISE ... Maureen Clifford © The #ScribblyBark Poet

Our coral reef is under threat - again ... sadly it's true
I wonder why and yet I know the reason.
The animals and other parts of earth that we should treasure
fall through the cracks and more pass every season.

The media's de-sensitized us all I sadly fear
too much horror shared on media screens each day,
we've hid compassion in the dusty corners of our minds
without reason - now, we just don't care to play.

We wear rose coloured glasses, only see what we must see
to get through our day, and through our busy lives.
The sweet smell of success just lures us onwards each decade
and we never give a thought how some survive.

And yet things disappear, in a minute in an instant
they are gone and we are powerless to object.
A war breaks out, the earth's crust cracks, the mother wreaks her vengeance
and all are vulnerable ; now circumspect.

The reminder's often given - we ignore it - we don't care.
Seems imagination's oft in short supply.
Unless it impacts directly onto our selfish lives
it's rare for humans to make much outcry.

It's time to go - the time is now, our coral reef's decreasing,
our earth itself and bees are under threat.
Orca's and other species including mankind perhaps
may soon be something that the world forgets.

Someday , somewhere, eons from now, somebody else might wonder
why one more civilization disappeared.
Perhaps they'll read old documents as our tombs they do plunder
and wonder at our demise which we ourselves engineered.
