Lasers, computers, for dummies in quantum land

Post by Dreamweaver » 01 Nov 2017, 01:42

Oh my poor head.
And this is for dummies!
Not so new, they started thinking about this before I was born,
The study of black-body radiation between 1850 and 1900, which could not be explained without quantum concepts. The photoelectric effect: Einstein explained this in 1905 (and later received a Nobel prize for it) using the concept of photons, particles of light with quantized energy.
Even lasers depend on it -
- 1917: Einstein proposes the theory of "stimulated emission," by which a photon, or light particle, induces an atom to emit an identical photon.
- 1953: American physicist Charles Townes builds forerunner of the laser, a "maser," for Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.
- 1957: Gordon Gould, a doctoral student under Townes, coins the term "laser," theorising that light could be used to excite atoms into making a coherent beam of light. Later files a patent; legal dispute lasts nearly three decades.
- 1960: First laser, built by Theodore Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories in California, becomes operational.

DW, I think you must be a masochist......why do that to your brain when understanding would be of no material benefit to you. I am quite content to leave it to the science boffins..... I am still trying to get my head around how we are able to over-write video tapes.

It's the mystery within it that intrigues me Hugo, rather than material aspects. :heeheehee
I learned about Schroedinger's cat many years ago, and just thought "they'll find where they've gone wrong one day!" Too incredible to believe, yet there's proof.
I know I'll never understand it, and maybe no-one fully does, but they are using it for marvelous inventions.

Science has progressed so far these days that I dont even understand the questions, much less the answers.

I strongly believe that DW's interests and curiosities are much more beneficial to our understanding of life then just calling it "hard work".
Having known DW for many, many years and well before her joining SP, I regard DW as the most well informed and genuine contributor to our web site.

Ruth's understanding, believes, knowledge, curiosity, support, empathy, and integrity, commitment and loyalty are unquestionable and priceless.

Anyone calling her other then a "genius" is trying to pick a fight with me!

DW, shrug off all and any criticisms and remain just as you are,,,,,,,,,,,,,, our beloved "Dreamweaver"!!!

And btw, I didn't sense any criticism. But didn't want to suggest you might have been into the moonshine! :heeheehee

So! We don't need to understand anything! It can work all on intuition!

So true Dreamweaver we sure don`t need to understand anything just guess lol thats what I do ... most times it works and other times well ,
I`ll leave that for someone else .. I can`t even work out a simple Samsung phone other than messages and calls not understand the email part of them .. I `m not willing to learn too much ..

When looking back to my highschool years, I could never understand why we needed to learn Algebra, Algorithms, Geophysics and other similarly horribly sounding subjects. It is now becoming a little clearer and perhaps I should offer my teachers some apologies for calling them some really horrible names!

Am I the only culprit in that arena?

I was teaching maths to my grand daughter & she said "we don't do it that way Poppy"
To which i answered. Hannah I know how to to maths 3 way, MY WAY 'HOW I WAS TAUGHT'
Your dads way 'HOW HE WAS TAUGHT' & NOW YOUR WAY.
It is marvellous How in 3 generations you can do maths 3 way & arrive at the same answer!!! :oops :heeheehee

Oh, by the way she got an "A" in Maths!!! :good_one

I can't get my head around the new ways. When I was at primary school we chanted the times tables at the start of class each morning. It eventually became so ingrained I never consciously think about it. We didn't have calculators, so it was just as well.

Bought a few groceries at Woolies the other day with a total due of $40.45.
Since I needed a little cash too, I said that I wanted her to give me some 'cash-out' from a total of $100.00.
Well, I thought I'd help her a bit and quickly asked her to just give $59.55. She looked at me like I came from another planet and said
"How do you know that's the correct amount?" as she was making the deductions with a pencil on a piece of paper.
I really was tempted to give a confusing answer but thought, poor thing what do they learn in school these days?
