Dreamweaver, it would appear that the tradition of midrash is alive and well in my little church, even in the Sunday school.

Dave Allen always poked fun at christianity. One could not do this with Islam.

Before we became more secular as a society, it wasn't wise to criticise or make fun of Christianity.

Chaucer and Shakespeare seemed to get away with poking fun at the clergy.

Good point. I had in mind the attacks on apostasy, e.g. the Inquisition.

I think that although Luther gets the praise for the Reformation, the approximate 500 years of Renaissance to Enlightenment had much to do with it. About 100 years before Luther, Jon Huss had a huge following of Hussites, and about 100 years before Huss, John Wycliffe had the following of noble families in England. There has always been dissent about authoritative views, right back to before the founding of the Orthodox churches and the Catholic churches.

Kf hugo is correct. We dont always agree but to suggest that its not the religion but some tribal issue is hog wash.
All religion is based on hate including Christianity. Read the Quoran and the Bible. Both want to inflict torture pn those who choose not to believe. Homosexuals must die. Religions are
hate based to give bigots justification

Mavis, you are right that some so-called Christians use the Old Testament Bible to justify their own attitudes. In the same way haters of religion can justify their own ingrained attitudes. They could of course look to the Christian scriptures, the New Testament.

But following any scripture can be a dangerous course. The Bible for instance is not a book, but a library of books. Where one might be able to agree with the content of one book in a library, I have yet to meet anyone who would agree with the content of a whole library. Instead one can pull up from it quotes to justify any ideology.

Of course I should add that to some degree all religion can I guess have diversity of interpretation. I have also met some very nice people here on silver peers who have if not changed my views have at least challenged my thinking.
Hey Dreamweaver thats really interesting. I never thought of the Bible as a library. Thank you.
