Nothing wrong with labels

Post by mavisbramston » 27 Feb 2018, 10:52

When I read this fabulous site I get the impression most people here are politically moderate or slightly left. The other place many of us came from was always to the right ..its now so right wing I left ages ago. Most members there wear jack boots to bed.
But back to silver peers.
I think I may be a bit more to the left than many.
I would love to know (dont worry I wont tell lol). Were any contributors here members of the Communist party or dabbled in socialist left?
Like me?
I moved away from communism but remain sympathetic to the basic ideals. Not all of them.
I dont mind describing myself as left and I find its a pity people are afraid to call themselves socialists. Well listen up. I AM A SOCIALIST. There I said it but I doubt anyone is surprised.
People seem to be scared of labels. Although I am a bloke I cant be a feminist I find it sad some women dont like the so called label.

Geez Mavis.... you've raised a question I've never really thought about. :hhuuuhhhh

I've always considered myself to be a "normal", not-too-well-educated bloke !
I've always voted Labor and I despise capitalistic pigs and snobs and the like.... apart from that I'm happy to look at all sides.

That's the beauty of this forum ! :twocents-mytwocents:

I describe myself as a progressive. For some people, that equates to socialist, if not outright communist. As you know, I'm a paid-up member of the Greens. I find more kindred spirits there than in other parties.

I suspect we may have come from the same place Mavis Bramston if so, you might be surprised. I am seeing a change there. It's very recent and has quite a way to go, but it's a start.

As for myself, I lean to the left, but only slightly and have been known to hop the fence. Having said that I would be very unlikely to hop the fence for any of the mob we have at the moment and am quite happy to describe myself as a bit of a lefty.

You have to be careful if you lean too far though. As one wonderful poster said only this morning (on that other place) when referring to 'the rabid right' ..." They lean so far to the right they walk in ever decreasing circles until eventually, they disappear up their own clackers."

Don't you love it, I admitted I was gonna steal it. Sadly the same can be said for the other side, often described as the loony left, just circling in a different direction.

It's been my experience though that people from the left are inclined to be more civil in their arguments than the other way around, just my opinion, and why I lean in that direction. I tend to be more trustful of people like that.

Not a member but I once voted for Jack Mundey.
Does that count for anything?
If you don't have an ASIO file by now then you should be ashamed of yourself.

Aren't we supposed to become more conservative as we get older?

Not Mundine, Mavis. Jack Mundey of Builders Labourers Federation and Green Bans in Sydney, and a card carrying Communist.

Yes we both were attacked. I will never forget the homophobia there. Its got worse Betty. I have not been back and no desire to return. This is much better.
I loved your sanity betty.

Back to my youth. Oh how I loved those late night arguments over red wine, unusual cigarettes ..we debated everything. Trotsky vs Marx and Lenin. Oh how lucky we were.
Oh I loved the debates on censorship, capitalism ...
Oh dont forget Vietnam.
