I know that in the past tertiary education in US specialised for younger students than in Australia, meaning they often suffered from lack of breadth, and Australian graduates were more valued. I don't know the present situation. This may be a way of correcting that, but I too fear it's not for all. I'll look forward to seeing how it fares.
