Re: Gut health
One of the biggest new areas of medical research in the 21st century is the investigation into the holistic effect of the gut microbiome on the human body. We are rapidly discovering that the vast community of bacteria that live in our gut are actually playing roles in everything from Multiple Sclerosis to depression. Two new studies have now found connections between the gut microbiome and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Alzheimer's disease.

I don't know if it is true or false that eating celery without stringing it is beneficial to the good bacteria, or an aid in expelling bad bacteria. But its strings are easier to chew if chopped up finely.

Re: Gut health
There's an Aussie biologist who was awarded a Nobel Prize for work in this area. Something to do with ulcers. He used himself as a guinea pig. Now they talk about using faeces from healthy humans to correct bacterial imbalances in the gut. Keep well!

I wouldn't mind some extra bifidobacterium! Especially enclosed in a gelatin capsule with some ambiguous name!

That was that Gastrologist Barry Marshall (I think he received the Nobel prize)cured Stomach ulcers which before were thought incurable, by being his own Guinea pig, by swallowing some of his own ?H- something?! (unable recall name!)

Something beginning with 'h' might have been helicobacter pylori.

Re: Gut health
An age old curse has always been along the lines of....."eat manure and expire". I cant believe that science is now coming to the alternate view that we should be eating excrement in order to maintain good health. I will stick to the wisdom of ages.....

Re: Gut health
Disgusting as the suggestion in Perroist's post is there is some wisdom in it. We were told by an old farmer to crumble dry sheep dung into the powdered milk that we gave to orphaned lambs. Under normal conditions a lamb as a human baby receives antibodies etc through its mothers milk and most importantly with that first feed, colostrum . In the absence of Mum that step is missed out on. Faeces have all of those beneficial bacteria in them, and those bacteria are required for gut health.
One of the reasons that septic systems often don't work well on nursing homes and elderly peoples homes are because of the huge amounts of antibiotics and medication that they are on, kills off the 'working' bacteria in the systems

Re: Gut health
Do you know, all you have to do to detect the Bacteria is to take a Sample breath test.
The course of treatment is a bit nasty, as you have to chew this charcoal substance & some other stuff.
I done the course about a year after it was put on the market.

Re: Gut health
Yes, bad breath can be caused by bad stomach health.
